About OwnDocs

OwnDocs is a self-hosted documentation platform. It covers MDX and Markdown authoring, full-text search, 26 theme variants, versioning, an OpenAPI embed, an MCP server, AI chat with your own provider key, and reader feedback, all in one Next.js codebase you can read, extend, and deploy yourself.

What's in the codebase

  • Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS 4.
  • 25 documentation components: cards, tabs, accordions, comparison tables, and more.
  • 26 built-in theme variants, chosen by whoever deploys the site through one environment variable.
  • Syntax highlighting for 71 languages, plus Mermaid diagrams sanitized with DOMPurify.
  • A built-in Model Context Protocol server, so Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf can search and fetch your docs directly.
  • An AI chat panel that answers from your own docs, using your own provider key: Anthropic, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or a local Ollama model. OwnDocs ships the integration, not a hosted AI service.
  • An OpenAPI and Swagger embed that turns a spec URL into a live reference page, with a Postman collection export.
  • Two access modes from one deployment, fully public or locked behind a shared password, switched by a single environment variable with no separate build.

Engineering you can verify, not take on faith

The product repository ships its own test suite: Vitest unit tests and Playwright end-to-end tests, both running in CI on every change, alongside linting and a dependency-vulnerability gate. The accessibility suite runs axe against WCAG 2.2 AA at three viewport widths, and a second suite fails the build if any page scrolls sideways at 320px. Every GitHub Action in that pipeline is pinned to a full commit hash rather than a mutable version tag, and tagged releases publish a CycloneDX software bill of materials alongside the archives. None of that is a claim you have to take on trust. It ships in the source code you buy, so you can read it and run it yourself.

How it's licensed

OwnDocs is sold once, not rented. The owndocs source license includes the full source code, the right to white-label it, and every Version 1 minor release and security patch for the lifetime of Version 1, at no extra cost. The owndocs resale license adds the right to resell OwnDocs to your own customers. There is no subscription, no seat count, and no usage meter. Version 2, the next major release, is priced and licensed separately once it is planned.
